Pillow Talk

Thousands of people pass through the doors of Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford every week, and for those who are admitted for an overnight stay (or longer), there is one group of people they can not wait to meet?  This group can be found laughing and joking around the ward, or providing topical chat and great music right by the bedside.  So who are they and why do they do it?

Hospital Radio Chelmsford shares in Chelmsford’s rich broadcasting heritage.  Whilst the radio landscape has changed dramatically over the past 45 years, this simple medical advice has not, “a friendly face, a smile and music all contribute to a quicker recovery”, and medical staff at Broomfield Hospital all agree. 

Originally formed in 1964 by volunteers with the mission of improving the patients stay in the hospital’s of Mid Essex. Our goal today of meeting with patients, playing requests and bringing a smile to the hospital community remains unchanged from our founding members.

We are now based at the centre of medical care in Essex in a purpose built studio complex in Broomfield hospital, although this was not our first home.  In our colourful history, we’ve been based in a common room in Chelmsford & Essex Hospital, in a caravan sited at St Johns Hospital and latter in the Grade II Listed Building, The Gate Lodge.
